Hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa celebrated a significant milestone in their career with their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025. The legendary trio, consisting of Cheryl “Salt” James, Sandra “Pepa” Denton, and DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper), received the Musical Influence Award in recognition of their groundbreaking contributions to the music industry.
During a captivating induction ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the group delivered powerful speeches that not only honored their legacy but also brought attention to the ongoing struggle for ownership of their master recordings. “This is for every woman who picked up a mic when they told her she couldn’t,” Salt proclaimed, emphasizing the importance of representation in the music industry.
While accepting the award, Salt addressed the challenges they face regarding their music being removed from streaming platforms, stating, “As we celebrate this moment, fans can’t even stream our music. It’s been taken down from all streaming platforms because the industry still doesn’t want to play fair.” She urged the industry to honor artists’ creativity with the respect and fairness it deserves.
The induction was presented by fellow hip-hop legend Missy Elliott, who praised Salt-N-Pepa as foundational figures in the genre. “The reason that you even know Missy Elliott’s name is because of Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella,” Elliott said passionately, highlighting their role in paving the way for future female artists in hip-hop. Elliott, who herself was the first female rapper inducted into the Rock Hall in 2023, wore a bejeweled jacket inspired by Salt-N-Pepa’s iconic style.
To commemorate the occasion, Salt-N-Pepa performed a medley of their classic hits, starting with “My Mic Sounds Nice” and transitioning into their anthem “Shoop.” The performance was electrifying, featuring bold visuals and a lively stage presence that reflected their trailblazing spirit. DJ Spinderella showcased her skills during a solo moment, while En Vogue joined the trio on stage to perform their collaboration “Whatta Man,” modernizing the lyrics for a contemporary twist.
Salt-N-Pepa’s induction highlights their status as one of the most influential hip-hop acts of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Their debut album, Hot, Cool, & Vicious, was the first by a female rap group to achieve gold and platinum status, primarily driven by their hit “Push It.” They continued to dominate the charts with tracks like “Expression” and “Let’s Talk About Sex,” and their 1993 singles “Shoop” and “Whatta Man” solidified their place in music history.
Having received numerous accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys in 2021 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2022, Salt-N-Pepa reflected on the significance of their Rock Hall induction. Salt remarked, “It’s kind of like what you want in your career; you want longevity, you want recognition… A lot of people are saying ‘long overdue.’ I say it’s right on time.”
As Salt-N-Pepa continue to advocate for ownership and representation in the music industry, their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame serves as a powerful reminder of their impact and the ongoing fight for artists’ rights.
