The basketball world is mourning the loss of Lenny Wilkens, a Hall of Fame player and coach who passed away on Sunday at the age of 88. Wilkens, a former star with the St. Louis Hawks and Seattle SuperSonics, is renowned for his remarkable contributions to the game, being the only individual named to both the NBA 75th Anniversary Team and the NBA’s 15 Greatest Coaches list.

In a heartfelt statement, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “Lenny Wilkens represented the very best of the NBA — as a Hall of Fame player, Hall of Fame coach, and one of the game’s most respected ambassadors.” Silver highlighted Wilkens’s unique distinction of being recognized among the league’s greatest players and coaches, a testament to his extraordinary impact on basketball.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Wilkens showcased his basketball prowess at Providence College, where he earned All-American honors twice. He was selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the 1960 NBA Draft by the Hawks, quickly establishing himself as a star with three consecutive All-Star appearances from 1963 to 1965. Transitioning to a player-coach role in his final years in Seattle, Wilkens went on to coach the SuperSonics to their first championship in 1979. His coaching career spanned decades, during which he led notable teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks, and was named Coach of the Year in 1994. Wilkens also coached the U.S. men’s national team, securing an Olympic gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

As the winningest coach in NBA history, Wilkens’s legacy extends beyond his impressive statistics and accolades. He is remembered for his ability to inspire and elevate his players, crafting teams that were not only successful but also left a lasting mark on the game.

Wilkens is survived by his wife, Marilyn, three children (Leesha, Randy, and Jamee), and seven grandchildren. The basketball community continues to share tributes and memories of Wilkens, honoring a man who dedicated his life to the sport.
