Hip-hop artist Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, was arrested last week in Chamblee, Georgia, after failing to appear in court for a ticket related to driving with a suspended license. The arrest took place on Friday when local police responded to a traffic camera alert that linked his Tesla Cybertruck to an outstanding warrant.
According to police records, Akon was initially found on September 10 in a disabled Cybertruck on a busy street. Officers discovered that he did not have valid auto insurance and that his driver’s license had been suspended due to his failure to attend a court hearing in January 2023. During that incident, police also seized an “illegal vape” from the vehicle.
After his arrest, Akon was taken to the DeKalb County jail and then transferred to the custody of the Roswell police, where he was booked and subsequently released on bail the same day. Representatives for Akon did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
Despite the legal troubles, Akon continues to maintain a busy schedule and was reportedly on tour in India at the time of the news, having recently performed in Delhi just two days after his arrest. Known for hits such as “Smack That,” “I Wanna Love You,” and “Locked Up,” Akon has enjoyed a successful career in music since his debut album in 2004 and has been actively involved in philanthropic efforts in Africa.
