New York State has announced the successful mailing of more than 8.2 million inflation refund checks to residents in an effort to provide financial relief as the holiday season approaches. Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed this initiative, which was established in the FY 2026 State Budget, allocating $2.2 billion to assist New Yorkers facing rising living costs.
The refund checks, which can be as high as $400, have been sent to eligible taxpayers over the past two months. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the governor to tackle the affordability crisis within the state, which includes middle-class tax cuts, an expanded Child Tax Credit, and the provision of free school meals.
To qualify for the refund, residents must reference their 2023 state tax returns. Individuals who filed taxes and are not claimed as dependents on someone else’s return are eligible. Payments are tiered based on income, aiming to provide greater support to lower and moderate earners. For instance, single filers earning up to $75,000 will receive $200, while joint filers earning up to $150,000 can receive up to $400.
Every region in New York has benefited from this initiative, with New York City receiving the largest share—over 3.5 million checks totaling approximately $828.8 million. Other regions, such as Long Island and the Mid-Hudson area, also saw significant distributions.
Residents do not need to take any action to receive their inflation checks, as they are automatically mailed to the most current address on file with the state. However, the Tax Department has issued a warning about potential scams, assuring taxpayers that no outreach will occur regarding refund checks.
Governor Hochul remarked, “Today marks the day that over 8.2 million inflation refund checks have been mailed out, putting money back into the pockets of individuals across the state.” She reiterated the commitment to continue seeking solutions to the ongoing affordability challenges faced by New Yorkers.
