New York Attorney General Letitia James is calling on residents to take action and claim their portion of a significant $700 million settlement with Google, which addresses anticompetitive practices associated with the Google Play Store. This settlement was secured in December 2023 by Attorney General James and a coalition of 53 attorneys general from across the nation.
The settlement revolves around claims that Google maintained an illegal monopoly over app distribution and in-app payment processing on Android devices, resulting in consumers facing fees of up to 30% on purchases made through the Google Play Store. Most of the settlement funds will be directed to consumers who made purchases on the platform between August 2016 and September 2023 and were adversely affected by Google’s actions.
As of December 2, 2025, Google has already deposited $630 million into the settlement fund. Impacted consumers began receiving claims notices, and in most cases, payments will be automatically issued once the settlement receives final court approval. Payments will be processed through PayPal or Venmo, using the email address or phone number associated with the consumer’s Google Play account. For those without a linked account, options include creating a new account or updating payment information as needed.
A supplemental claims process will be available for consumers who prefer not to use PayPal or Venmo, have lost access to their contact information, or expected a payment but did not receive one. Consumers can sign up on the settlement website to receive notifications when this process opens.
