In a significant legal development, the New Orleans rap duo $uicideboy$ has settled a $6.4 million copyright lawsuit with the iconic hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia. The lawsuit stemmed from allegations that $uicideboy$ sampled 35 of Three 6 Mafia’s tracks without permission, a situation that had been brewing since 2020.
Juicy J and DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia initially filed the lawsuit against $uicideboy$ member Scrim, claiming unauthorized use of their music. However, recent court filings confirm that the parties have come to an agreement, effectively putting an end to the five-year legal battle. The official document stated, “Plaintiffs Paul Beauregard p/k/a ‘DJ Paul’ and Jordan Houston p/k/a ‘Juicy J’ (‘Plaintiffs’), on the one hand, and Ivan Ramirez (‘Ramirez,’ and together with Plaintiffs, the ‘Parties’) on the other hand, hereby agree that this case has been settled in its entirety.”
Interestingly, the relationship between the two groups has been complicated. While Juicy J has collaborated with $uicideboy$ in the past, other members of Three 6 Mafia were reportedly more hesitant about the partnership. During the lawsuit, $uicideboy$ countered the claims by arguing that the suing parties did not hold the copyright for the songs in question and that previous agreements allowed them to sample Three 6’s music in exchange for contributions to Juicy J’s mixtapes.
As the dust settles, it remains to be seen if any of the involved parties will publicly comment further on the matter. The resolution of this lawsuit marks a complicated yet crucial chapter in the evolving landscape of hip-hop and copyright issues.
