R&B singer Trey Songz, whose real name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was arrested for allegedly punching a nightclub employee in Manhattan after becoming “needlessly irate” over closing time. The incident occurred at Dramma Night Club in Times Square around 4:25 a.m. on December 4, according to prosecutors.
Following the confrontation, the 41-year-old singer was arraigned on assault charges stemming from the nightclub altercation. He also faces an additional charge of second-degree mischief related to an earlier incident at Mira, a restaurant and hookah lounge in Manhattan on the same morning.
During the early hours of December 4, Songz reportedly caused approximately $1,500 worth of damage at Mira, breaking various items, including hookahs, DJ equipment, and sofas.
Upon his release from custody, Songz was seen wearing a black face mask and was released on his own recognizance. Prosecutors indicated that the nightclub worker involved in the incident was granted an order of protection against him. As he left the courthouse, Songz declined to comment, stating only, “Have a good night, brother,” to a photographer.
His attorney, Mitchell Schuster, released a statement asserting that the altercation began when individuals instigated a confrontation with Songz, attempting to surround him. Schuster claimed that Songz’s security intervened to protect him, leading to the confusion and subsequent arrest. He emphasized that Trey is cooperating fully with authorities and expressed confidence that the full context of the events would emerge.
This is not the first legal trouble for Songz, who has had a series of run-ins with the law, including a 2016 charge of aggravated assault and accusations of rape and sexual assault. He is scheduled to return to court on February 18.
