Celebrity Lawsuit: Jay-Z’s Lawyer Marcy Croft Files $25M Defamation Suit Against Tony Buzbee

Marcy Croft, a lawyer closely associated with Jay-Z’s criminal justice reform efforts, is taking a stand against alleged character attacks from prominent Texas lawyer Tony Buzbee. Croft has initiated a defamation lawsuit seeking $25 million in damages, claiming that Buzbee and others conspired to tarnish her reputation.

According to reports from HotNewHipHop, Croft accuses Buzbee of propagating false narratives that label her as a criminal, thereby damaging her professional standing. The lawsuit highlights Croft’s role in ROC Nation’s criminal justice initiatives, where she has collaborated with Team ROC, Jay-Z’s philanthropic branch, to advocate for prison reform.

The legal troubles began in December 2024 when a former client of Buzbee, identified as Jose Maldonado, approached Croft for a free consultation regarding concerns over financial misconduct at the Buzbee Law Firm. After determining that no claims existed, Croft ended her communication with Maldonado. Subsequently, she alleges that Maldonado and Buzbee orchestrated a targeted campaign against her.

Croft’s lawsuit claims that Buzbee and his associates utilized their substantial social media following—over 100,000 combined followers on platforms like Instagram and Facebook—to disseminate damaging accusations against her. These accusations included illegal client solicitation, bribery, intimidation, and obstruction of justice. Furthermore, the lawsuit states that similar allegations were circulated in letters sent to former clients on Buzbee Law Firm letterhead.

The suit outlines several serious allegations, with Croft claiming she has been falsely accused of employing “agents” to instigate lawsuits. She contends these allegations are not only misleading but also serve as a diversion from Buzbee’s own legal and financial challenges.

Croft’s lawsuit includes six causes of action: defamation, defamation per se, false light invasion of privacy, intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, and civil conspiracy. She is seeking at least $25 million in compensatory and punitive damages, citing significant harm to her reputation, emotional distress, and a loss of professional standing.

As of now, Buzbee has not filed a response in court regarding the lawsuit. This legal dispute adds to a series of ongoing controversies involving claims related to Jay-Z that have since been dismissed, although neither party is implicated in those earlier legal matters.
