Mary J. Blige is set to deepen her collaboration with Lifetime by entering into a three-picture deal, which will feature original films inspired by her iconic music. The first project, titled Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy, draws its name from her beloved 1994 hit song from the acclaimed album My Life.
Be Happy will mark the directorial debut of Gabourey Sidibe, known for her powerful performance in Precious. The film will feature a talented cast, including Tisha Campbell (Martin), Mekhi Phifer (ER), and Russell Hornsby (BMF).
The storyline revolves around Val (played by Campbell), a devoted wife and stay-at-home mother who faces a turning point as her youngest child prepares to leave for college. Struggling with feelings of emptiness and emotional distance from her husband Ross (Hornsby), Val embarks on a journey of self-discovery, reigniting her passions and confronting the challenges of her evolving identity. A spontaneous trip to New Orleans to support her pregnant daughter, Kayla (Zing Ashford), leads her to cross paths with the charming photographer Peter Mosley (Phifer), who helps her rediscover her worth and artistic spirit. Val must ultimately confront the question: Is it ever too late to choose yourself and embrace the love you deserve?
This film is part of Blige’s ongoing commitment to creating impactful stories through her production company, Blue Butterfly Productions. She will serve as an executive producer, alongside Bruce Miller and Milana Edwards Brooks as co-producers. The production also involves Monami Productions, Motion Entertainment, and Swirl Films, with a script penned by Cameron J. Ross.
Previously, Blige has adapted several of her song titles into successful TV movies for Lifetime, including Real Love, Strength of a Woman, and Family Affair, which collectively reached over 6.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen.
