In a significant development for the music industry, the Grammy Awards will introduce a new category this year to honor album covers and the artists behind them. This marks the first time in over 50 years that specific recognition will be given to the visual artistry that complements music.
The decision to create a category for best album cover highlights the importance of visual art in the music landscape. As lead singer Rhian Teasdale of the British indie rock band Wet Leg noted, the cover for their sophomore album Moisturizer was inspired by a blend of whimsical and repulsive elements, showcasing the creativity involved in album artwork. Teasdale, along with art directors Iris Luz and Lava La Rue, received a Grammy nomination for their evocative design, which reflects the artistic vision that goes into creating memorable album art.

The other nominees for this prestigious award include Bad Bunny’s Debi Tirar Mas Fotos, Tyler, the Creator’s Chromakopia, Perfume Genius’s Glory, and Djo’s The Crux. Each nomination highlights the collaboration between recording artists and art directors, with this year’s award recognizing the contributions of both in all but one case.
Previously, album covers were assessed under the best recording package category, which considered all physical materials and images associated with an album. However, the Recording Academy, led by CEO Harvey Mason Jr., decided to separate the categories to better acknowledge the impact of cover art in the digital age. Mason emphasized the Academy’s goal of recognizing more artists who shape music, enhancing the visibility of creative teams involved in album production.

Photographer Neil Krug, nominated for his work on The Crux, expressed the significance of cover art, stating, “When a cover in a campaign hits right, it’s part of the language and the fabric of what makes a great record a great record.”

The introduction of this new category not only celebrates the artistry behind album covers but also serves as a reminder of the integral role that visuals play in the music experience. As the Grammy Awards approach, fans and industry professionals alike are eager to see how this new category will evolve and impact future award seasons.
