New York City is bracing for additional protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as demonstrators rally in response to the fatal shooting of Renee Good by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis. Following a significant turnout of hundreds in Manhattan’s Foley Square, organizers are preparing for further demonstrations on Thursday.
In the wake of the shooting, New York lawmakers are set to introduce new legislation aimed at preventing ICE agents from wearing masks during operations, amidst growing concerns about immigration enforcement in both the city and across the nation.
The deadly incident has sparked fear and anxiety among immigrant families in New York City, prompting the New York Immigration Coalition to organize a rally on January 7, 2026. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has publicly reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the city’s sanctuary laws, which restrict city resources from aiding civil immigration enforcement.
“Made it clear to everyone within my city government, and that extends to NYPD, that we are going to uphold our sanctuary city policies,” said Mamdani, emphasizing the importance of these protections, which do allow exceptions for violent criminals.
The protest began just hours after news of the Minneapolis shooting broke, drawing a crowd that filled Foley Square for several hours. Demonstrators marched around the federal immigration building, holding signs and chanting slogans against the federal immigration crackdown.

“We anticipate that they’re probably going to come and bring more ICE agents into New York City. Our plan is to be more organized than they are, just like you saw down in Chinatown,” stated Hannah Stauss from Hands Off NYC, referencing previous protests that involved clashes between ICE agents and demonstrators.
The protests reflect a growing movement against ICE’s activities, particularly in light of recent events that have heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement. As the community continues to mobilize, the calls for sanctuary and protection for immigrant families remain strong.
