Celebrity Lawsuits: Salt-N-Pepa’s Legal Battle with Universal Music Group Dismissed

Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton of the iconic hip-hop duo Salt-N-Pepa faced a setback in their legal efforts against Universal Music Group (UMG) when a U.S. District Court judge ruled against their claim to reclaim ownership of their master recordings. The decision was announced on January 8, 2026, after UMG’s legal team successfully moved to dismiss the lawsuit.

The lawsuit originated from Salt-N-Pepa’s assertion that UMG had removed their songs from streaming platforms in response to their attempts to regain control over their music catalog. The duo’s claim was based on the “termination rights” provisions outlined in Section 203 of the Copyright Act of 1976, which allows artists to reclaim copyrights on their master recordings after a specified period. However, U.S. District Judge Denise Cote concluded that Salt-N-Pepa never held ownership of their masters, as they had originally transferred those rights to their first label, Noise in the Attic (NITA) Productions. Furthermore, the contract that passed those rights to Next Plateau Records—a predecessor of UMG—did not include Salt-N-Pepa.

A spokesperson for UMG expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, characterizing the lawsuit as “baseless.” The representative noted that prior to the lawsuit, UMG had made several attempts to amicably resolve the situation, enhance the artists’ compensation, and ensure continued access to their music for fans. Despite the legal resolution, UMG remains open to finding a mutually agreeable solution moving forward, emphasizing their commitment to honoring Salt-N-Pepa’s legacy.

As the music industry continues to navigate complex legal challenges, the dismissal of this case serves as a reminder of the intricacies surrounding artists’ rights to their own work.
