HipHopRaisedMeSports: Gervonta “Tank” Davis Stripped of WBA Lightweight Title

In a significant turn of events, Gervonta “Tank” Davis has been stripped of his WBA Lightweight title, now designated as the “Champion in Recess.” This measure comes in light of his ongoing legal troubles and a notable absence from the boxing ring.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) made this decision following the issuance of an arrest warrant for Davis in Miami Gardens, Florida, stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred in October 2025. The seriousness of the charges against him, which include battery, false imprisonment, and attempted kidnapping, has raised concerns about his immediate future in the sport.

The “Champion in Recess” status is typically reserved for athletes who are unable to defend their titles due to injuries or inactivity, allowing them to maintain their championship status and the opportunity to reclaim their title upon returning to competition. Unfortunately, Davis has only defended his championship twice over the past three years, with his last bout resulting in a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach in March 2025.

With Davis now classified in this inactive role, the WBA is expected to facilitate a matchup between leading contenders, such as #1 Floyd Schofield from the USA and #2 Lucas Bahdi from Canada, to establish a new active champion in the lightweight division.
