In a tragic incident on Saturday morning, federal immigration officers shot and killed a man in Minneapolis, identified as 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a local ICU nurse and U.S. citizen. The shooting occurred near Nicollet Avenue and West 26th Street during a targeted operation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agents.
This event marks the third shooting involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis within the month. U.S. Senator Tina Smith condemned the actions of the federal agents, stating, “Eyewitness video shows, once again, reckless, violent, and dangerous federal agents taking the life of a Minnesotan.”

The altercation unfolded shortly after 9 a.m. Central Time as federal officers were executing an operation against another individual wanted for a violent offense. According to Gregory Bovino, head of U.S. Border Patrol, Pretti allegedly approached the agents with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, leading to a confrontation where he reportedly resisted attempts to disarm him. Bovino claimed the agent shot Pretti in self-defense, asserting that the situation posed a significant threat to law enforcement.

However, bystander footage, which has not been independently verified, appears to contradict the official narrative, showing federal agents surrounding Pretti and physically restraining him prior to the shooting. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that Pretti had no known criminal record, aside from traffic violations, and indicated that he was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry.

The shooting has ignited protests in the community, as residents and activists gather to express their outrage over the federal agents’ actions. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced plans to seek a temporary restraining order to halt federal immigration enforcement operations in the city. Earlier this month, another Minneapolis resident, Renee Macklin Good, was also shot and killed by federal agents during a similar operation.

Governor Tim Walz has voiced his anger over the incident, stating, “This is sickening,” and called on President Trump to put an end to the immigration crackdown. The situation continues to evolve as investigations into the shooting are underway.
