In a bizarre turn of events, a man was taken into custody on Wednesday after allegedly attempting to impersonate an FBI agent in a bid to free Luigi Mangione from a Brooklyn jail. This information comes from federal court documents and law enforcement sources.
The suspect, identified as Mark Anderson, approached the intake area of the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn and claimed to be an FBI agent armed with paperwork authorized by a judge to release a specific inmate. That inmate was confirmed to be Luigi Mangione, who is currently facing charges for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, following an incident that occurred on the streets of Manhattan in December 2024.
According to a court affidavit unsealed on Thursday, Anderson, 36, from Mankato, Minnesota, had traveled to New York for a job opportunity that ultimately fell through. He is currently working at a local pizzeria. When confronted by Bureau of Prisons officers, Anderson presented his Minnesota driver’s license and claimed to possess weapons.
The affidavit detailed how Anderson purportedly threw numerous documents related to claims against the Department of Justice at the officers. Additionally, he expressed a desire to be arrested, claiming that he was being targeted by the Jalisco New Generation cartel based in Mexico.
It remains unclear if Mangione was aware of Anderson’s actions during this incident. Following Anderson’s detention, a search of his backpack uncovered a large barbeque fork and a round steel blade, leading to his arrest.
Currently, Anderson is being held in the Special Housing Unit of the Metropolitan Detention Center. Meanwhile, Mangione awaits trial, with jury selection set to begin on September 8.
