Eve’s contribution to the 1999 single, which went on to win Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 2000 Grammy Awards, was not credited at the time, leading to her exclusion from the initial accolades. The rapper released her debut album, Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady, shortly after, in September of the same year.
During the ceremony, Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr. expressed the organization’s commitment to rectifying this oversight, stating, “When we recently learned about the story, it was really simple. We needed to make it right. So tonight, the Recording Academy is here to offer a much-deserved respect and recognition.”
Questlove, the frontman of The Roots, also addressed the oversight during a recent podcast episode, admitting that the group had failed to recognize Eve properly. He remarked, “We were extremely inconsiderate… I never wanted you to think it was a thing where I was like, ‘Let me erase her out of history.’”
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Eve reflected on her journey, dedicating the award to “little Eve from Philly, the little girl who loved to write rhymes and just wanted to be in the business.” She conveyed her gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and the notion that “what is yours never can miss you, even 30 years later.”
