Hip Hop Angels: Remembering Oliver ‘Power’ Grant, Wu-Tang Clan Co-Founder

Oliver “Power” Grant, a significant figure in the Wu-Tang Clan’s legacy, has passed away at the age of 52. His death, reported by the hip-hop music platform Okayplayer, comes as a profound loss to the hip-hop community. Grant was instrumental in executive producing the group’s debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and played a pivotal role in establishing their expansive business ventures, including the renowned Wu Wear clothing line.

The Wu-Tang Clan reflected on Grant’s impact on their legacy, stating, “Power helped build a global legacy rooted in independence, ownership, and culture.” Fellow member Method Man expressed deep sorrow on Instagram, sharing a heartfelt tribute: “Rest in Power, Power. Paradise my Brother safe Travels!!” alongside a personal photo.

Growing up in Staten Island’s Park Hill projects alongside future Wu-Tang members, Grant was a foundational force from the very beginning. In 1992, he helped secure the funding for their debut single “Protect Ya Neck.” Reflecting on his early contributions, Grant noted in a 2011 interview, “I was more the financial guy… Everything that we learned was hard knock life, you figure it out as you go along.”

As executive producer for their debut album in 1993, Grant’s vision extended beyond music. He launched Wu Wear, which quickly became a cultural phenomenon, generating an impressive $25 million annually at its height. He described the brand’s impact by saying, “The logo and the Wu was like an international communicator… It’s like if you’re familiar with Gucci or Louis Vuitton, you just identify and go towards it.”

Grant’s influence also extended to television, with his life depicted in the Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga, where actor Marcus Callender portrayed him. Callender recalled their early conversations, emphasizing the depth of Grant’s storytelling rather than direct instruction.

As we mourn the loss of Oliver “Power” Grant, we celebrate his remarkable contributions that helped shape the Wu-Tang Clan into a cultural phenomenon. His belief in creative control and community empowerment will continue to resonate within the hip-hop community and beyond.
