Celebrity Legal: Wiz Khalifa’s Appeal Denied in Romanian Drug Case

Wiz Khalifa’s hopes of overturning his drug possession sentence in Romania have been dashed. The Pittsburgh rapper’s appeal was dismissed by the Constanta Court of Appeal, as reported by CBS News. This ruling, made just a month after his appeal was filed, leaves Khalifa facing a potential nine-month sentence in the European country.

Initially, it appeared that Khalifa had narrowly escaped serious repercussions, having been fined 3,600 lei (approximately $830) last April for “illegal possession of dangerous drugs.” However, prosecutors contested this leniency, successfully appealing for a more stringent punishment in December. Romania is known for having some of the toughest drug laws in Europe, where possession of cannabis for recreational use can result in a minimum of three months and up to two years in prison, or simply a fine.

According to prosecutors, Khalifa was found with over 18 grams of cannabis during the Beach Please! Festival in Continesti.

The rapper’s troubles began after his performance in July 2024, where he was arrested on-site. Following the incident, Khalifa took to social media to express his remorse and appreciation for the Romanian authorities, stating, “Last night’s show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big a*s joint next time,” he humorously noted.

While the immediate future remains uncertain, there is speculation about whether Romanian authorities may pursue extradition or if the U.S. government might intervene, as they typically shy away from extraditing individuals for non-violent drug offenses—especially when the potential penalties abroad are more severe than those in the United States.
