In an exciting development within the music industry, Legacy Publishing has officially launched, boasting an impressive catalog of over 800 songs following the acquisition of the Blackground/Black Fountain Publishing catalog. This new venture is spearheaded by renowned music executive Chaka Zulu, alongside partners Paris Kirk and Boikai Cummings.

The catalog showcases iconic tracks from celebrated artists such as Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, and Timbaland, as well as notable collaborations featuring hip-hop luminaries like Jay-Z, Drake, Lil Wayne, and Nas. Legacy Publishing will be based in Atlanta, with additional offices in Los Angeles, London, and Johannesburg, enhancing its global reach.

According to the press release, Legacy Publishing aims to breathe new life into these classic works through strategic collaborations, innovative financial frameworks, and proactive asset management. While the specifics of the acquisition deal remain undisclosed, it is backed by a diverse group of investors from various sectors, including sports, consumer goods, and financial services. Notable investors include NBA star John Wall, Nyema Tubman from SheaMoisture/Sundial Brands, Courtney Stewart of Right Hand Music, and artist Brent Faiyaz of ISO Supremacy.

Chaka Zulu, a veteran in the industry and co-founder of Disturbing tha Peace Records, stated that the name “Legacy” reflects their commitment to building a business that future generations can take pride in. He emphasized the importance of values, thoughtful acquisitions, and clear objectives in their mission.

Cummings, who leads CIH Group and the forthcoming asset management software Octav AI, noted that copyright owners are increasingly seeking financial agility and genuine partnerships. He stressed the necessity of having the right structure and experienced partners to evolve high-quality music assets for a new era.

Since acquiring the Blackground/Black Fountain catalog, Legacy Publishing has already released 15 new songs that incorporate samples from the catalog, racking up over 726 million streams on Spotify. Noteworthy releases include “CN Tower” by PARTYNEXTDOOR featuring Drake, “WASSUP” by Young Miko, and “GONE,” a previously unreleased track from Aaliyah and Tank.

The company has also made significant strides in securing sync placements across various media, including film, television, gaming, and advertising. Tracks like Drake’s “Look What You’ve Done” have been featured in Hulu’s series Reasonable Doubt, while Young Miko’s “WASSUP” appears in EA Sports’ FC 2026 and a Nike campaign.

Kirk, also a partner at COLTURE, highlighted that Legacy Publishing is uniquely positioned as one of the few publishing groups where partners actively manage some of the world’s leading artists. With over three decades of combined expertise in cultural curation, deal structuring, and asset management, Legacy is poised for significant growth.
