International News: Nigerian Artists Earn Over $40 Million on Spotify, Elevating Afrobeats on the Global Stage

In a remarkable milestone for Nigeria’s music industry, local artists have earned more than $40 million from Spotify streams in 2025, amounting to approximately ₦60 billion. This significant revenue reflects the rapid growth of Nigeria’s digital music economy and highlights the increasing global interest in Afrobeats and Nigerian sounds.

According to Spotify’s annual Loud & Clear report, Nigerian musicians enjoyed an impressive 30.3 billion streams in 2025, earning over $42 million and further establishing Nigeria’s influence in the global music landscape. The revenue generated by these artists surged by more than 140% over the past two years, driven by a growing demand for Afrobeats both domestically and internationally.

The report indicates that Nigerian music dominated Spotify’s charts, with local artists making up over 80% of the platform’s Daily Top 50 in Nigeria. Notably, local streaming of Nigerian tracks increased by 170% year-on-year, demonstrating robust domestic support for homegrown talent. In 2025, streams of Nigerian female artists rose by 55%, while independent artists saw a 75% increase in streams, indicating a flourishing ecosystem beyond established names.

Jocelyne Muhutu-Rémy, Spotify’s Managing Director for Africa, expressed excitement about Nigeria’s music scene, stating, “Nigeria’s music story continues to be one of creativity, innovation, and global cultural influence. What we’re seeing is a market where talent is not only reaching new audiences around the world but also building deeper connections at home.”

Spotify’s editorial team has played a crucial role in promoting Nigerian artists, adding nearly 2,000 acts to curated playlists throughout the year. The data revealed that Nigerian music was widely embraced globally, appearing in almost 320 million user-generated playlists, with more than 12 million created in Nigeria alone.

The report also highlights the evolving tastes of Nigerian listeners, with genres such as pop urbaine, alternative pop, anime, emo, and drill witnessing substantial growth. This shift indicates a diverse musical appetite among audiences, moving beyond conventional mainstream tracks.

Spotify’s Loud & Clear initiative aims to enhance transparency in music streaming economics, allowing artists, fans, and industry stakeholders to better understand how earnings and engagement are evolving in the digital age.

As Nigerian artists continue to make waves on the global stage, the future of Afrobeats looks brighter than ever, with increased opportunities for creative expression and international collaboration.
