Local News: 15-Year-Old Boy Shot on Subway Train in Queens

A 15-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after being shot on a Manhattan-bound subway train in Queens on Monday evening. The incident unfolded just after 6 p.m. on an A train near the 80th Street station, sending waves of fear through passengers during the evening rush hour.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted, prompting terrified commuters to hit the floor for safety. Junior White, a fellow passenger who was two subway cars away from the shooting, recounted the panic. “It was pandemonium, everybody just took off running, man. Including the two guys, the teenagers that were fighting,” he said. “We all jumped onto the floor and stayed below, and the doorman opened the doors up and some people ran out, but I stayed below.”

The victim was struck multiple times, including at least once in the chest, and was quickly transported to Jamaica Hospital by police. Fortunately, he is reported to be in stable condition, and no other injuries were reported among passengers.

In the aftermath of the shooting, police detained two persons of interest, both teenagers, but they have since been released as the investigation continues. Authorities are working to uncover the details surrounding the fight that led to the gunfire and whether the victim had any prior connection to the shooter.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz visited the scene, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. “Any time there is a shooting on a train, it is a tragedy for the city of New York,” she stated. “We hope to get many more of these weapons off the street and out of the hands of our young people.”

As police search for the weapon involved in the shooting, the NYPD is conducting a thorough investigation at the 80th Street station, leading to significant disruptions for A train services between Manhattan and Queens.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges surrounding subway safety in New York City. As the community grapples with the implications of this shooting, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of passengers and addressing the root causes of such violence.
