Celebrity Lawsuits: T.I. Files Suit Against Cinq Music Over Contract Dispute

In a significant legal development, rapper T.I. has initiated a lawsuit against Cinq Music, alleging that the label is refusing to honor a contract related to his recorded music catalog. This latest dispute adds to T.I.’s long history of legal battles and highlights the complexities often encountered in the music industry.

The lawsuit stems from a 2017 agreement in which T.I. sold a substantial portion of his music catalog to Cinq Music. According to Billboard, T.I. claims that the label has since reneged on the terms of the contract, which included a provision allowing him to repurchase his masters at a predetermined price. Instead, Cinq Music is reportedly demanding nearly $50 million more than what T.I. believes he owes, leading to allegations of contract violation and misconduct.

T.I.’s attorney, Robert Jacobs of the law firm Manatt Phelps & Phillips, stated in the lawsuit that Cinq Music has attempted to “artificially inflate” the repurchase price of the masters. The complaint alleges that the label has engaged in tactics to frustrate T.I.’s efforts to complete the purchase, effectively trying to extract a payment that is nearly 20 times higher than the amount stipulated in their agreement.

This legal dispute with Cinq Music is not the only challenge T.I. is currently facing. He has also been embroiled in a highly publicized feud with fellow rapper 50 Cent. Earlier this year, during a podcast appearance, T.I. accused 50 Cent of backing out of a previously agreed-upon Verzuz battle, claiming that this action led him to lose all respect for the rapper. The feud escalated further when 50 Cent responded with sharp comments that involved T.I.’s wife, Tiny, prompting a backlash from T.I.’s children, who released diss tracks aimed at 50 Cent. The situation reached a point where T.I. expressed concern over the content of his son’s diss track, admitting that it may have crossed a line.

As T.I. navigates these legal and personal challenges, the outcome of his lawsuit against Cinq Music could have significant implications for his career and financial future. The case serves as a reminder of the intricate and often contentious nature of artist-label relationships in the music industry.
