Celebrity Lawsuits: Chad Hugo Faces Dismissal of $1 Million Lawsuit Against Pharrell

Chad Hugo is racing against the clock as he faces the possible dismissal of his $1 million lawsuit against Pharrell Williams over alleged missing royalties from their time as the production duo known as The Neptunes. A federal judge, Andre Birotte Jr., has issued an order that could see Hugo’s case thrown out due to his failure to serve legal papers to the defendants, including Pharrell and several associated entities.

Hugo originally filed the lawsuit in January 2026, claiming that Pharrell had withheld over $1 million in royalties, particularly from N.E.R.D.’s 2017 album “No One Ever Really Dies.” He accused Pharrell of engaging in “willful and shady” practices by keeping him out of financial dealings and failing to provide access to important songs that were allegedly missing from label portals and SoundExchange, which are crucial for tracking and distributing royalties.

The judge’s order, issued on May 14, gives Hugo until May 22 to provide a valid reason for why his lawsuit should not be dismissed. The case has hit a snag due to Hugo’s failure to serve the necessary papers within the 90-day window mandated by federal rules, which has left Pharrell and the other involved parties—N.E.R.D. Music LLC, Neptunes LLC, and several others—unaware of the legal action against them.

Hugo’s legal troubles with Pharrell come on the heels of a previous lawsuit he filed in 2024 over the use of The Neptunes name, in which he accused Pharrell of trying to monopolize the brand without including him. That case remains unresolved at a federal board.

As tensions between the two Virginia Beach producers escalated, they have not spoken since 2021, with Pharrell publicly confirming their fractured relationship. With the looming deadline, Hugo must act quickly to salvage his current lawsuit, or risk losing his chance to pursue the royalties he claims are rightfully his.

As the deadline approaches, the music industry watches closely to see how this dispute will unfold. For more updates on celebrity lawsuits and the latest in the entertainment world, keep following hiphopraisedmetheblog.com.
