A tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18 has left three people dead, including a security guard, and has sent shockwaves through Muslim communities across Southern California and beyond. Prior to the shooting, the mother of one of the suspects alerted law enforcement, expressing concern that her son, along with her firearms and vehicle, were missing. She mentioned that he had suicidal tendencies and believed he was with a friend. Chief Wahl indicated that “hate rhetoric” may have played a role, although a definitive motive has yet to be established. Reports suggest that writings with anti-Islamic sentiments were found in the suspects’ vehicle, prompting the FBI to assist local authorities in the investigation.
The shooting transpired on the first day of Dhul Hijjah, a sacred time in the Islamic calendar, heightening the outrage expressed by community leaders. Imam Taha Hassane condemned the attack, calling it “extremely outrageous” to target a place of worship. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria echoed these sentiments, labeling the event as a “violent act of hate.” The Islamic Center will remain closed until further notice as the community grapples with the aftermath of this horrific event.
