Local News: New York Prisoner Amin Booker Secures $600K Settlement with Legal Assistance from Gibson Dunn

Amin Booker, a New York state prisoner who endured over five years in solitary confinement, has reached a significant milestone in his quest for justice. After filing a handwritten lawsuit against the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Booker has settled his claims for $600,000, thanks in large part to the support of attorneys from the prestigious law firm Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP.

Booker’s ordeal began when he was placed in isolation at Elmira Correctional Facility, confined to a windowless cell for 23 hours a day. His lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleged that his placement in solitary was a retaliatory measure for whistleblowing on the mistreatment he witnessed at the hands of corrections officers. This bold move to challenge the system was initiated in January 2016, and despite the challenges faced by pro se litigants, Booker’s determination allowed his claims to survive a motion to dismiss.

Recognizing the strength of Booker’s case, the Office for Pro Se Litigation connected him with Gibson Dunn attorneys who agreed to represent him pro bono. Justine Goeke, a partner at Gibson Dunn, praised Booker’s perseverance in preserving his claims, noting that it is not uncommon for pro se cases to be dismissed due to procedural issues such as failing to exhaust administrative remedies.

The settlement marks a significant victory not only for Booker but also highlights the importance of legal advocacy in addressing the rights of incarcerated individuals. The Gibson Dunn team, which included associates Marc Aaron Takagaki, Kate Goldberg, Theodore Kristek, and Sophie White, played a crucial role in bringing Booker’s case to resolution.

Booker’s activism within the prison system also deserves recognition; he was elected to the Incarcerated Liaison Committee at Green Haven Correctional Facility in 2015. This committee comprises incarcerated individuals who work alongside facility administrators to advocate for changes and address grievances, a practice established following the 1971 riots at Attica Correctional Facility.

This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by individuals within the correctional system and the power of legal intervention in seeking justice. Amin Booker’s settlement not only compensates him for his suffering but also shines a light on the importance of holding authorities accountable for their actions.
