In a significant development for New York City, construction has commenced on what is set to become the world’s tallest jail, located in Chinatown at 125 White Street. Designed by the renowned architecture firm HOK, the Manhattan Detention Facility aims to replace the infamous Rikers Island jail complex with a more modern and community-focused structure.
Standing at 335 feet tall and featuring 13 floors, this imposing facility, often referred to as a “jailscraper,” will be built on the site of the former Manhattan Detention Complex, known colloquially as “The Tombs,” which was demolished in 2024. This new detention center is part of a broader initiative to address the pressing issues associated with Rikers Island, which has been notorious for its harsh conditions and violence.
The architectural design incorporates a unique double skin system that enhances security while promoting visual privacy for those incarcerated. In total, the jail will accommodate 1,040 beds.
