Brooklyn Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Subway Attack in Chelsea

In a disturbing scene caught on video, a man was violently pushed onto the subway tracks in Chelsea, leading to the swift arrest of the suspect. Eyewitness News released footage showing the moment a man, standing near the platform’s edge, was shoved into the path of a 1 train just after 1:30 PM on Tuesday at the 18th Street station.

First responders quickly intervened, navigating between the stopped subway cars to rescue the 45-year-old victim, who has since been taken to Bellevue Hospital. Fortunately, sources report that he is now in stable condition.

Within an hour of the incident, authorities apprehended 23-year-old Kamel Hawkins from Brooklyn. Commuters at the Chelsea station expressed their shock and concern over the attack, with one rider, Anthony Rodriguez, stating, “They want to raise fares and push new policies, but they can’t even keep New Yorkers safe. It’s really sad.”

Mayor Eric Adams addressed the situation, highlighting his efforts to assist individuals experiencing homelessness and mental health struggles within the subway system. He pointed to a decrease in subway crime in 2024 and an overall drop since 2009, but acknowledged that public perception often contradicts these statistics. “People are seeing real harm, and that overshadows our successes,” Adams remarked.

The use of surveillance cameras has not only helped police make arrests but has also made these violent incidents more visible to the public. Commuter Ethan Barsh shared his feelings about safety in the subway, saying, “I still feel relatively safe in the city, but seeing something like that on video is definitely unsettling.”

Hawkins now faces charges of attempted murder and felony assault. Authorities believe the attack was random, as there was no prior interaction between the suspect and the victim before the shocking shove.
