Nelly Furtado Explains Why She Passed on Drake’s Last-Minute Performance Request in Toronto

Nelly Furtado recently opened up about why she declined Drake’s invitation to perform with him in their hometown of Toronto, and it’s not due to any lack of appreciation for the superstar rapper. During a guest appearance on the popular podcast “Call Her Daddy,” the “Promiscuous” singer revealed that her decision came down to timing.

Drake had reached out to Furtado at 11 PM for a performance scheduled at 1 AM. She explained, “I love him to death, but I was like, ‘I’m not showing up without glam.’ He’s so famous, it would be everywhere.” Despite the missed opportunity, she expressed her admiration for Drake, acknowledging his significant role in putting Toronto and Canada on the global map.

Furtado also expressed her hopes for a future collaboration with Drake, saying, “I still think it would be cool to have a song with Drake. I think people would love that. We’re both Canadian and have that Toronto connection. It would be really good.”

While she turned down the last-minute request, Furtado did perform with Drake at his October World Weekend event in 2022. During that memorable appearance, Drake introduced her by saying, “Right now, I need you to sing as loud as you possibly can because this right here took a lot! This next person’s music changed my life so much. I love her with all my heart.”

Before the concert kicked off, Drake took a moment to pay homage to the artists who laid the groundwork for Toronto’s hip-hop scene, recalling a pivotal moment from his youth when JAY-Z brought out Kardinal Offishall during a performance. He reflected on how that experience opened his eyes to the possibilities within the music industry.
