Diddy is seeking a two-month postponement of his criminal trial, which is currently scheduled for May 5, as he faces serious allegations of sex trafficking and racketeering. According to court documents obtained by Billboard, Diddy and his legal team argue that they cannot “in good conscience” proceed to trial in May due to recent developments in the case.
The request for a delay follows new charges that were added to Diddy’s case through a superseding indictment, to which he pleaded not guilty earlier this week. Additionally, Diddy has enlisted Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, to assist in his defense. His legal representatives, Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, emphasized in their letter to Judge Arun Subramanian that the extra time would allow them to adequately prepare for the trial. They also accused the prosecution of creating complications that led to the need for a delay, stating, “This is a problem that the government has created, yet it opposes our reasonable request.”
During a recent hearing, Agnifilo had initially proposed a shorter, two-week adjournment; however, that request has now expanded to a two-month delay. Judge Subramanian expressed frustration with the idea of postponing the trial, remarking, “We are a freight train moving toward trial.”
The attorneys pointed out that superseding indictments often justify granting continuances, as they can significantly impact a defendant’s ability to prepare a defense. For now, Diddy’s trial date remains set for May 5, and he continues to maintain his innocence while residing at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Authorities first arrested Diddy in September of the previous year on charges related to sex trafficking and racketeering. As the situation develops, many are closely following the proceedings as they unfold, with the music mogul’s future hanging in the balance.
