In a recent development in his ongoing sex trafficking trial, Diddy has demanded a mistrial if the court decides to remove a Black juror from the jury. The founder of Bad Boy Records, along with his legal team, submitted a letter to Judge Arun Subramanian, asserting that the prosecution’s attempt to dismiss the juror is racially motivated.
The controversy stems from the juror’s responses to a pre-trial questionnaire, which the prosecution claims indicated issues related to residency rather than any bias towards Diddy or the case. Diddy’s defense team contends that the prosecution is exploiting the situation to eliminate a Black male juror, stating, “to take advantage of an opportunity to strike yet another black male from the jury.”
As the trial progresses, Judge Subramanian has shown a tendency to support the dismissal of the juror. However, Diddy’s defense argues that removing the juror without just cause could discourage future jurors of color from participating in legal proceedings.
Currently, the jury consists of five Black members out of twelve total jurors, with eight identifying as people of color. Diddy’s team has made it clear that if the juror is dismissed, they will pursue a mistrial.
In addition to the juror issue, Diddy has faced scrutiny for his behavior in the courtroom. Judge Subramanian previously reprimanded him for making faces and nodding at jurors during witness testimonies, which the judge warned could lead to further restrictions, including barring Diddy from the courtroom.
Diddy’s courtroom presence has been notable, frequently seen passing notes to his attorneys and interacting with his mother, who has been attending the trial from the public gallery.
As the trial unfolds, the tension surrounding the jury composition and the implications of race in the courtroom continue to be focal points in Diddy’s high-profile legal battle.
