Reflecting on his time with The Roots, Storch stated, “I started in The Roots and did a lot of the stuff for them, very underappreciated.” He recounted being told he was like “the Pete Best of The Roots,” referencing the former Beatles drummer who was replaced before the band’s rise to fame. Storch expressed that he felt unappreciated and chose to pursue opportunities outside the group, including his collaboration with Dr. Dre on the 2001 album 2001.
Storch further elaborated on his departure, sharing a personal anecdote about a breakup with his girlfriend at the time, who suggested he made a mistake by leaving the group. “I see bigger,” he stated, emphasizing his desire to step out of the shadows and not be known merely as “the white guy who plays keys in The Roots.”
