Celebrity News: Fugees Rapper Pras Michel Undergoes Emergency Surgery for Colon Cancer

In a significant health development, Pras Michel, the rapper from the iconic group Fugees, recently underwent emergency surgery for colon cancer, resulting in the postponement of a key court hearing related to his federal criminal case. The surgery took place on August 28, and it was revealed that doctors discovered the cancer during a routine checkup.

Michel was initially scheduled to appear in court on August 29 to discuss the forfeiture of funds following his 2023 convictions for illegal foreign lobbying and conspiracy. However, his legal team informed the court that he was unable to attend due to a “significant medical concern.”

In a statement, his spokeswoman Erica Dumas expressed support for Michel, stating, “Pras missed Friday’s sentencing hearing while undergoing emergency surgery for colon cancer removal. We stand with him and his family and wish him a full recovery as he addresses this serious health matter.” Dumas added that Michel is currently focused on recovery and spending time with his family as he prepares for his sentencing.

The Fugees, comprised of Pras, Lauryn Hill, and Wyclef Jean, gained fame in the 1990s with hits like “Killing Me Softly” and “Fu-Gee-La.” After their split in 1998, the members pursued solo careers, with occasional attempts at reunions in recent years.

Pras Michel’s legal troubles stem from accusations that he funneled money from fugitive Malaysian financier Jho Low to support Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign while also attempting to influence a Justice Department investigation and a China-related extradition case. In April 2023, he was convicted on multiple charges, including conspiracy and witness tampering, following a trial that featured testimony from high-profile figures like actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

As prosecutors aim for a lengthy prison sentence, Pras’s lawyers are advocating for a significantly lighter sentence of 36 months, arguing that it would be a fair outcome given the circumstances. The government is seeking to recover over $64 million in alleged illicit gains from Pras.

The sentencing hearing has yet to be rescheduled, but a new date for the forfeiture hearing has been set for October 3. As Pras navigates this challenging time, both his health and legal situations remain in the spotlight.
