In a dramatic turn of events during the annual West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn, a reputed gangbanger has been charged with attempted murder following a series of shootings that left several individuals injured. Dashawn Fleming, 31, who is reportedly affiliated with the 9 Trey crew, was arrested in connection to the violence that erupted just before 7 p.m. on Monday, September 1, at the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and Sterling Street in Crown Heights.
According to police, the shooting injured two men: a 53-year-old man who was shot in the neck and leg, and a 40-year-old man shot in the ankle. Both victims were hospitalized and are reportedly in stable condition.
Fleming was apprehended at the scene as he attempted to flee from law enforcement. A 9mm handgun and four shell casings were recovered, leading to charges of attempted murder and assault against him.
The chaos did not end there. In a separate incident around 9:40 p.m., a 14-year-old boy was shot in the hand and back at Rochester Avenue and Eastern Parkway. He was taken to Maimonides Medical Center and is also in stable condition. The teen reported hearing shots and feeling pain but had no further context about the situation.
The day’s violence continued with multiple shootings along the parade route. Earlier, a 26-year-old man was shot in the leg, and a 42-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet. Additionally, two more men, aged 26 and 21, were shot shortly before 7 p.m., with the older victim struck in the shoulder and the younger man in the chest.
In a separate incident, a 30-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach and slashed in the hand, just blocks from where the parade had taken place. This victim was cleaning up outside when he intervened in a fight, leading to his injuries.
Despite a record number of NYPD officers deployed to the festivities, the parade was marred by violence, raising concerns about safety at events that have historically been overshadowed by similar incidents.
