In a tragic incident that unfolded on Labor Day weekend, a suspect was apprehended just minutes after a fatal shooting in Yonkers. The Yonkers Police Department reported that officers responded to a call at 27 Ludlow St. around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, where they found 42-year-old Felix Santiago suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a local hospital, Santiago tragically did not survive his injuries, as confirmed by police on Monday, September 1.
Investigators revealed that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the suspect and a family member of the victim. According to the police, as the suspect passed Santiago on the street, he allegedly fired three shots, striking him once in the abdomen.
Thanks to prompt action by detectives, who utilized city security cameras to track the suspect’s movements, Linzell Staggers, a 26-year-old Yonkers resident, was arrested within 15 minutes of the shooting. When apprehended, Staggers was found in possession of a 9mm handgun equipped with an extended 30-round magazine.
He now faces serious charges, including second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies. The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office is overseeing the prosecution of the case.
