Rap icon Nas is on a mission to honor hip-hop legends through an innovative series of albums and comic books in collaboration with Mass Appeal. The project, titled Legend Has It…, aims to celebrate the contributions of legendary artists while elevating them to superhero status.
Since his debut in 1991, Nas has been a prominent figure in amplifying New York hip-hop. His groundbreaking album Illmatic redefined lyricism in the genre, and he has consistently paid homage to pioneers like Kool Moe Dee and MC Shan throughout his career. Now, with the Legend Has It… series, he is set to release albums featuring rap heavyweights such as Slick Rick, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, and Mobb Deep, alongside a posthumous record from Big L scheduled for release on Halloween.
In an exciting twist, Mass Appeal has partnered with Marvel to create a Legend Has It… comic, which portrays these hip-hop icons as superheroes. The first issue, written by Brandon Thomas and illustrated by Sanford Greene, debuted at Comic Con in October, with more issues on the way. “Every artist that’s on this Marvel cover was once comic-book fans,” Nas remarked, expressing the joy of merging his love for hip-hop and comics.
During a recent interview, Nas reflected on the significance of this project, stating, “It’s finally become a global thing… to play any part in it today, this year, 2025, is a dream come true.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing the roots of hip-hop and the impact these artists have made over the years.
With the Legend Has It… series, Nas aims to inspire a new generation while honoring those who paved the way. He believes that artists are like superheroes, helping people navigate tough times through their music. “It’s about uplifting people,” he said, “and reminding us all of the pureness of hip-hop.”
