Derrick Groves, a 27-year-old inmate serving a life sentence for two counts of second-degree murder, has been apprehended after evading capture for nearly five months. Groves was among ten prisoners who escaped from a New Orleans jail on May 16. Authorities caught him at a residence in Atlanta, making him the last member of the escape group to be recaptured.
In a statement regarding Groves’ capture, District Attorney Jason Williams highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Groves’ escape represented a serious breach of public safety and a historic failure of custodial security.” He expressed relief that Groves was back in custody, noting the concerns of victims, their families, and the community over a convicted violent offender being on the loose for so long. Williams emphasized that every legal avenue would be pursued to ensure Groves faces justice for his crimes.
Attorney General Liz Murrill also commented on the arrest, confirming that Groves now faces additional charges related to his escape. She praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement, particularly the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation, in bringing Groves back into custody.
Groves’ original conviction stemmed from a 2018 shooting during a Mardi Gras celebration, which resulted in multiple charges, including second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. As law enforcement continues to address the implications of his escape, the focus remains on ensuring safety and accountability within the justice system.
