New Album Alert: De La Soul’s Upcoming Album Title Pays Tribute to Trugoy The Dove

De La Soul has officially announced the title of their highly anticipated new album, Cabin in the Sky, which serves as a heartfelt tribute to their late member, Trugoy The Dove (David Jude Jolicoeur). The news was revealed during a panel at New York Comic Con on October 10, where Posdnuos and Maseo joined hip-hop legends like Nas, Raekwon, and Ghostface Killah to promote Mass Appeal and Marvel’s new Legend Has It comic book collaboration.

Reflecting on the impact of Trugoy’s passing in early 2023, Posdnuos shared how the loss affected their creative process. “When we lost him, I took on that role to keep Dave alive and celebrate him,” he explained. “There are times where I’m writing rhymes and I’m getting goosebumps ’cause I feel like Dave would be saying, ‘Yo, that’s dope!’”

The album title, Cabin in the Sky, is inspired by the 1943 all-Black musical film of the same name, featuring notable figures such as Ethel Waters and Louis Armstrong. Posdnuos expressed that discovering the film’s title resonated deeply with him, saying, “Immediately, I felt Dave.”

This upcoming project marks De La Soul’s first album in nearly a decade, following the critically acclaimed And the Anonymous Nobody…, which earned a Best Rap Album nomination at the 2017 Grammys. Cabin in the Sky will also extend Mass Appeal’s Legend Has It… campaign, showcasing new music from iconic New York hip-hop artists, including Slick Rick, Raekwon, and Ghostface Killah.

Fans can look forward to the album’s release in November via Mass Appeal Records, as De La Soul continues to honor Trugoy’s legacy while bringing their unique sound back to the forefront of hip-hop.
