Tim Westwood, a prominent figure in UK hip-hop broadcasting, has formally entered a not guilty plea to all 15 charges against him. During a court appearance on December 8 at Southwark Crown Court in London, the 68-year-old former DJ of BBC Radio 1 and Capital Xtra denied each allegation, setting the stage for what may become one of the most significant trials in British music history.
As reported by BBC, Westwood faces serious accusations, including four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault, involving seven women over a period spanning more than three decades. The alleged offenses are said to have occurred between 1983 and 2016, during a time when Westwood was a key player in shaping UK rap culture.
In the courtroom, Westwood appeared in a burgundy shirt and black jeans, reportedly clasping his hands as the charges were read aloud. Many of the allegations are linked to his time at the BBC, with three incidents reportedly taking place at BBC Studios in 1996 while he hosted the Radio 1 Rap Show.
Westwood’s attorney reiterated his client’s longstanding denial of any wrongdoing, emphasizing that Westwood “strongly denies all allegations of inappropriate behavior.” This position was reinforced during the hearing, as Westwood’s legal team maintained their defense against the claims.
The judge has granted Westwood conditional bail, which comes with strict instructions prohibiting him from contacting any witnesses. A pre-trial review is set for December 2026, with the full trial scheduled to commence on January 25, 2027.
Once a dominant voice in UK hip-hop radio, Westwood interviewed numerous high-profile artists, including Jay-Z and Eminem. However, his reputation faced significant challenges after multiple women came forward with allegations of misconduct in 2022. The impending trial will be crucial in determining whether Westwood’s long-standing career can endure the weight of these serious charges.
