Lil Durk’s ongoing legal troubles took a significant turn recently as his defense team’s motion to dismiss his murder-for-hire case was denied by U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald. The motion was based on allegations that prosecutors failed to disclose death threats made against a judge involved in the case.
According to journalist Meghann Cuniff, Judge Fitzgerald ruled against the defense’s request for either an evidentiary hearing or the removal of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles from the case. The defense argued that there was a “concealment” of four threatening voicemails directed at U.S. Magistrate Judge Patricia Donahue in February and one voicemail aimed at Assistant U.S. Attorney Ian Yanniello in April. They claimed that these threats were intentionally hidden to manipulate the bail process.
However, Judge Fitzgerald dismissed the motion, stating, “There is just absolutely no basis for this motion. Just none. Absolutely none.” He noted that the prosecution had informed Durk’s legal team of the threats back in October, and these threats did not impact Judge Donahue’s subsequent bail denial in May. The judge also rejected the notion that the threats warranted the recusal of attorneys or an outright dismissal of the case.
Lil Durk is currently facing serious charges in a federal murder-for-hire trial, with a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. The case stems from allegations that he orchestrated a plot to kill rival rapper Quando Rondo in 2022, following a shooting that left Rondo injured and resulted in the death of his cousin, Lul Pab.
Durk was arrested in October 2024, and there have been multiple delays in the proceedings. The trial is expected to commence sometime in April or May 2026, depending on the judge’s final decision regarding the schedule.
