Celebrity Murder: Judge Expresses Sympathy to Former Suspect Karl Jordan Jr. Following Assault in Brooklyn Jail

In a recent court hearing, a Brooklyn Federal Judge extended her condolences to Karl Jordan Jr., the man previously accused of murdering hip-hop icon Jam Master Jay, after he suffered injuries from an assault while incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn.

Judge LaShaan DeArcy Hall conveyed her genuine sorrow during the proceedings, stating, “I was genuinely saddened to hear of the assault that happened to you. That should have never happened. It looks like you are on the mend,” addressing Jordan, whose conviction for the murder of Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay was overturned last December.

Jordan was hospitalized after being stabbed during an incident at MDC in February 2025, although it remains unclear if Judge Hall was referring to this specific attack.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the situation.

The emotional exchange took place while Judge Hall ordered Jordan to remain in custody due to pending drug-related charges, despite the overturning of his murder conviction.

Jordan’s legal team intends to submit a bail application soon, as he has been in jail since September 2020. His conviction was overturned after Judge Hall determined that there was insufficient evidence to establish a motive for the alleged murder of Jam Master Jay, whose real name was Jason Mizell.

In February 2024, Jordan and his co-defendant Ronald Washington were found guilty of murdering Mizell in his Queens studio more than two decades ago, supposedly in retaliation for a failed drug deal. Testimonies from various witnesses during the four-week trial recounted the tragic events leading to Mizell’s death on October 20, 2002.

Judge Hall’s 29-page ruling indicated that prosecutors had not adequately demonstrated that the shooting stemmed from a botched drug transaction, in which Mizell was said to have shortchanged both men in a cocaine deal earlier that summer.

The MDC, known for its hazardous conditions, has housed several high-profile inmates, including accused killer Luigi Mangione and Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, as noted by the Legal Aid Society in a recent press release.
