In a significant legal development, Carmen Bryan has filed a lawsuit against hip hop artist N.O.R.E., detailing serious allegations of sexual assault stemming from an incident that allegedly occurred in May 1999. The 20-page complaint, filed in New York, outlines Bryan’s claims that N.O.R.E., whose real name is Victor Santiago, assaulted her while celebrating the release of his album “Melvin Flynt – Da Hustler.”
According to the lawsuit, Bryan asserts that Santiago approached her at a club and committed an act of “nonconsensual digital penetration” while being intoxicated. She further alleges that he overpowered her and that the assault only ceased when other patrons intervened. The lawsuit characterizes Santiago’s actions as nonconsensual sexual contact, offensive touching, assault, battery, sexual assault, and gender-motivated violence.
The lawsuit also highlights a troubling moment where N.O.R.E. allegedly apologized to Bryan upon realizing she was the partner of rapper Nas and the mother of his child. Bryan’s attorney, Marjorie Mesidor, emphasized that such an apology does not mitigate the gravity of the alleged assault. “No woman signs up to be assaulted,” Mesidor stated, arguing that the notion of excusing such behavior due to the perpetrator’s failure to recognize the victim strips women of their fundamental humanity.
