Hip hop culture has officially found its place in education with the opening of the Bronx School of Hip Hop, welcoming its inaugural class of approximately 100 freshmen. This innovative public high school aims to create a unique learning environment where hip hop is not only celebrated but also integrated into the curriculum.
Founding principal Jason Reyes, a Bronx native and former middle school principal, expressed his excitement about the school’s launch, describing it as a dream come true. “It just feels, it’s a dream come true, that’s the best way I could put it,” Reyes said, highlighting the significance of this milestone.
The school is adorned with artwork and tributes to iconic hip hop artists like Lauryn Hill, Biggie, and Jay-Z, creating a vibrant atmosphere for students. “We want students to come in and feel like they’re home. They’re in the Bronx,” Reyes added, emphasizing the school’s connection to the community.
Among the new students is Xavian Sanchez from Harlem, who was drawn to the school by its hip hop focus. “Just like hearing hip hop being in a school myself already automatically caught my eye,” Sanchez remarked.)
The Bronx School of Hip Hop is designed to teach traditional subjects through the five elements of hip hop culture, providing students with a relevant and engaging educational experience. During a tour, Reyes showcased classrooms equipped to connect academic subjects with cultural experiences, such as a math class where students use a microphone to rap their math problems.
Yasmin Silvera, a geometry teacher at the school, encourages creativity in learning, stating, “I know you’re excited to step into the studio and tell me all about your geometric calculations.”
Additionally, the school offers a counselor’s office featuring a meditation station, underscoring the importance of cultural identity and personal well-being. “The extreme value of leaning into who you are, what your culture brings to the table, is paramount,” Reyes said, noting that students will see themselves reflected in the curriculum.
Starting with just ninth graders, the Bronx School of Hip Hop plans to expand each year, ultimately serving students from ninth through twelfth grade within four years. This pioneering school represents a significant step in integrating hip hop culture into education, promising to inspire future generations of artists and scholars.
