The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Glennis Alvin Brown, affectionately known as “Sly,” a key figure in the pioneering duo Twin Hype. Brown passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the age of 56. Twin Hype, composed of twin brothers Glennis “Sly” Brown and Lennis “Slick” Brown, rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s, becoming known for their infectious energy and innovative contributions to hip-hop and dance music.
Twin Hype first gained national attention with their hit single “Do It To the Crowd,” which became a staple in hip-hop clubs and is still celebrated today as a classic. Their sound was characterized by a blend of hip-hop beats and dance music, making them one of the first groups to emphasize dance as a core element of their performances. This approach not only garnered them a loyal fan base but also helped pave the way for future artists in both the hip-hop and pop genres.
The duo’s energetic live shows, filled with synchronized dance routines and audience engagement, set them apart during an era when hip-hop was still evolving. They released several albums, including their debut album “Twin Hype” in 1989, which showcased their unique style and solidified their place in the music scene. The group also participated in various tours and music festivals, further establishing their reputation as electrifying performers.
In addition to their musical achievements, Twin Hype was known for their distinct fashion sense, often sporting colorful outfits and hairstyles that reflected the vibrant culture of hip-hop during that time. Glennis leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by his loving son, Corinthian Brown of Moncks Corner, SC, along with siblings Wilhelmenia Brown-Weatherley, Sarah Limehouse, Maxine Quinn (Robert), Valerie Brown, Willie Brown Jr., Gene Brown, Irving Brown, Rufus Brown, Isiah Brown, and his twin brother Lennis Brown, all of whom reside in South Carolina. He is also survived by aunts Dorothy Brown, Albertha Martin, and Ann Monteiro, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Rebecca Finley Brown, and siblings Victoria Brown and Norman Brown.
During this difficult time, the family has requested privacy and asks for thoughts and prayers for Corinthian, the siblings, and their extended family. A public viewing for Glennis “Sly” Brown will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Divinity Mortuary.
